31 Days of Blogging – Day 2

When I was young I loved going to my paternal grandmother’s house.  I still do, in fact.  Gran and I are very similar in many ways.  She loves to read and is quite thoughtful and emotional.  Our personalities are very much the same.

One thing I remember specifically is watching The Last Unicorn and Fantasia in her living room.  These were my two favorite movies to watch as a little.

Fantasia was especially fascinating to me. All that music mixed with all those colors and images! A few years ago my Ma was talking about how I loved that movie. She was kvetching that I used to watch it all the time, and that she found it very boring. Yet, she sacrificed so I could enjoy my cartoons mixed with classical music. Thanks Ma!

My favorite was the Hippo ballerina.

The Last Unicorn is a very odd film. It’s animated, but as I’ve grown I’ve realized I’m not sure exactly how appropriate it is for younger viewers. There is definitely some adult humor, and parts of it are particularly frightening. However, I really loved to watch it. Schmendrick the magician was my favorite. Voiced by Alan Arkin, he was incredibly awkward and I adored him. I think he might have been my first fictional crush. Perhaps he is the reason I still have a penchant for big noses. (The Nerd has a spectacular profile!)

I’ve seen many, many, many films in my time. These two still stick out to me for some reason.

I think it’s time to give Fantasia another viewing! Perhaps a date night with the hubs is in order.
